Greggs stores across England are to reopen 800 branches for takeaways from Thursday.

The aim is to reopen the remaining 1000 stores by early July.

Stores will be operating a reduced menu to ensure social distancing in kitchens and workspaces.

Bosses have also introduced new health and safety measures, and have provided floor markings, protective clothes for staff and screens at counters among several measures to protect against coronavirus spreading.

KFC and McDonald’s have also recently reopened and seen long car queues for drive-thru services.

Non-essential retailers were also greeted with hundreds of shoppers as stores were able to reopen their doors on Monday 15 June.

Greggs had been allowed to stay open throughout the lockdown, offering takeaway and delivery services.

But bosses decided to remain closed for the safety of staff and customers.

Greggs are expecting sales to remain subdued as the chain copes with fewer customers allowed in stores at any one time.

The company have said that a proportion of staff “will remain furloughed until sales levels begin returning to normal.”

The reopening follows a series of small-scale trials near Greggs’ offices.

Ahead of reopening 800 Greggs stores across England for takeaways from Thursday, Chief Executive Roger Whiteside said:

“Looking forward, although great uncertainty remains, we are excited to be resuming our service for many customers this week.

“We are confident of our ability to adapt to market conditions in the short term while continuing to invest in the long-term growth of our business.”
