Works to begin on Riverhead Exchange bus stands

Maintenance works are set to begin on Monday 22 June on a number of bus stands at the Riverhead Exchange.

The works form part of the transport team’s general maintenance budget for the year and will include the removal of fire damage and repainting of bus stands C, D, E and F.

Fire damage was uncovered when the bus stop seating was removed as part of plans to tackle the anti-social behaviour in the area.

The Council are continuing to look at alternatives for refurbishment of the front benches and other methods of addressing the anti-social behaviour issues identified.

Councillor Ron Shepherd said:

“The area has been subject to anti-social behaviour which has included groups of street drinkers gathering and causing intimidation towards members of the public waiting for a bus, glass getting stuck in the wooden bench slats and rubbish accumulating at the back of the benches.

“Council workers have continued to engage with groups that congregate, clean the benches and remove any potential hazards, but it has become a recurring issue which is deemed unreasonable for the public.

“This is why we decided to remove some of the benches, with the public’s safety and comfort being of paramount importance. By doing this, staff have uncovered the fire damage which will be resolved during these works.”

The shelters will be temporarily closed, but people will still be able to catch busses.

Works will be overseen by North East Lincolnshire Council’s regeneration partner ENGIE, with Empower carrying them out.

All stands are due to reopen from Thursday 25 June.
