COVID-19 tracker appears on smartphones

Smartphone users have started to find a new feature called ‘COVID-19 Exposure Logging’ on their devices without having installed it themselves.

On Thursday the UK Government annoucned their decision to change their original coronavirus-tracing app to a Google-Apple Model.

The new feature works by contact-tracing and is aiming to help track the spread of coronavirus.

iPhone users can find the COVID-19 Exposure Logging feature in their Privacy settings by selecting the Health option.

The feature is automatically off and cannot be turned on without an authorised app, which will need to be installed before any exposure notifications can be sent.

Once the feature is enabled, smartphone devices will be able to exchange random IDs with others when using bluetooth.

These IDs will be stored for up to 14 days and will be able to notify the device user,  if they have been exposed to the virus.

The Apple-Google model has been promoted as being more privacy-focused.

The Government are aiming to have the track and trace app ready for use in the autumn.
