Man sentenced to prison for assaulting an on-duty female police officer

A man has been sentenced to prison after being convicted of assault on an on-duty Police Community Support Officer.

On 27 May 2020 at approximately 9.20pm, an on-duty PCSO became aware of an argument between two men near to the library on Temple Road.  After approaching the men to intervene and asking them to remain calm, one of the men is reported to have launched into an unprovoked attack on the officer.

Information provided by Thames Valley Police states that the female officer was punched and kicked multiple times before falling to the ground, where she continued to be assaulted by the attacker.

The PCSO managed to activate the emergency button on her radio whilst members of the public stepped in and detained the man.

Police officers attended the scene shortly thereafter and arrested Shaun Carlisle, a 56-year-old Cowley resident. Carlisle was charged the following day and plead guilty of assault by beating of an emergency worker.

Investigating officer PC Emma Marshall who is based at Cowley police station, said:

“I am pleased that Carlisle pleaded guilty at the first opportunity to prevent our PCSO the ordeal of a trial.”

The attack is said to have had a ‘profound effect’ on the PCSO who is yet to return to work.

Superintendent Joe Kidman, the Local Policing Area commander for Oxford City, added:

“This was a vicious attack on a public servant much loved by the local community she is dedicated to serving.  A prison sentence is appropriate and necessary to show the court’s and our disgust at this individual’s actions.”

The Superintendent has also paid tribute to the members of the public that intervened, calling them “quick thinking and courageous.
