Trains to resume as landslip repair work finishes

Landslip repair work has finished earlier than expected, meaning that train services into and out of Scunthorpe are to resume.

The landslip was discovered on Friday 12 June between Scunthorpe and Althorpe, during routine maintenance inspections.

TransPennine Express services on the Cleethorpes to Manchester route have not run between Scunthorpe and Doncaster for a week, while Northern trains on the Scunthorpe to Doncaster route did operate until the full closure was put into place.

Replacement bus services have been running between Scunthorpe and Doncaster to ensure that key workers are still able to commute.

Network Rail teams have also been on site monitoring the area so that a reduced passenger service could continue on one line.

And civil engineering teams have been carrying out repair works.

Speaking after the incident, Steve Hopkinson, Regional Director at Northern, said:

“Due to vital repairs being carried out between Scunthorpe and Doncaster we have had to make emergency changes to our timetable.

“From Thursday 18 June rail replacement buses will operate between the two towns to help people get where they need to be while the repairs are completed.

“Social distancing measures will be in place on the buses and customers should wear a face covering unless they are exempt.

“We really appreciate the patience and understanding of our customers during this difficult time and we’re working closely with Network Rail to get this issue resolved as soon as possible.”

It was estimated that works would continue until at least June 24.

However, landslip repairs have finished early, and train services are expected to resume tomorrow.

A Network Rail statement said:

“The line has been closed since Thursday to allow vital repairs to take place following a landslip on Friday, June 12.

“Initially, the line was able to remain open to a reduced service with Network Rail teams on site monitoring the area.

“However, as these services had to travel at a significantly reduced speed and not all services were able to run, Network Rail took the decision to close the railway for seven days to carry out repairs.

“The repair work saw steel piles installed to stabilise the embankment.

“This work was scheduled to take seven days, however good progress on site has meant that the repairs will complete earlier than planned.

“This means a full train service will be able to resume on Tuesday, June 23.”
