Changes to Cleethorpes Promenade
North East Lincolnshire Council have now partially reopened the Central Promenade in Cleethorpes.
The road has been closed during the daytime since mid-May to encourage people to social-distance, and to avoid an influx of out of town visitors parking along the seafront.
But, following the Prime Minister’s announcement around the social distancing relaxation for many places due to come in on 4 July, a review of traffic arrangements on the Central Prom has been conducted.
The Council have now implemented changes and reopened the promenade to traffic in both directions on Wednesday.
Parking bays on the seaward side of the promenade have reopened.
However, the spaces on the other side remain closed.
Barriers have been put in place to allow pedestrians more space to walk and social distance.
These updated measures are being put in place to help boost trade in the resort as it tries to re-establish itself in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak.
The Council have stressed that if the measures result in a spike of cases, then closures will be reinstated.
Traffic management is still in place in other areas, including Sea View Street, St Peter’s Avenue and Market Place.
This will continue to be monitored and considered in light of further government guidance which may be issued in the future.
Councillor Stewart Swinburn said:
“I’d like firstly to thank people who were in the resort in the last few weekends for generally acting responsibly and helping us with the new arrangements.
“We have a lovely resort here, and realised early on that we would need to do something to spread visitors out through the resort to help them maintain social distancing.
“However, we think that the time has come for us to open the central prom back up to increase the available parking. Officers will be monitoring the situation on the proms, and should we need to, we can consider re-closing the area.
“We want to create a safe resort for everyone to enjoy, both local people and visitors. But people need to maintain social distancing and follow the Government guidelines to keep our resort safe.”
