By Special tribute to Portsmouth key workers
Portsmouth will mark Hampshire Day on Wednesday (July 15) by flying the county flag in the city centre and paying tribute to NHS staff and key workers who have kept the county running during coronavirus.
The red and yellow Hampshire flag will fly outside Portsmouth City Council‘s Civic Offices on what will be the second annual Hampshire Day. The date was established in 2019 as an opportunity to celebrate the county’s diverse communities and share pride in Hampshire’s heritage, culture, natural environment and people.
This year’s celebrations will focus on thanking those people who serve the county in frontline roles, from medical teams and carers, bus and train drivers, to those delivering goods and keeping shelves stocked.
Councillor Gerald Vernon-Jackson, Leader of Portsmouth City Council, said: “We are proud to raise the county flag in celebration of Hampshire Day. This year, the day provides an excellent opportunity to reflect on the vital role Hampshire’s key workers have played in recent months and to offer our thanks for their tireless efforts in the face of the huge challenges presented by coronavirus.”
HM Lord-Lieutenant of Hampshire Nigel Atkinson said: “Hampshire, like all counties, has had to deal with many challenges during the past few months and I am extremely proud to be living in a county where all the councils have worked so well, together with the emergency services and the NHS. The coronavirus may have kept us two metres apart but in other ways it has brought us far closer.
