Calls for compulsory face coverings in offices

Following the announcement that face coverings will become compulsory in shops in England from 24 July, there are now calls to extend this to all public spaces, including offices.

It has been suggested that anybody working in a public or private setting should be made to wear a face mask.

This could mean that some people are expected to wear face coverings for around 8 hours at a time.

As of 11 May, government guidance has advised the public to wear face coverings in enclosed public spaces.

It is expected that the new regulations regarding face coverings in shops will be made under the Public Health (Control of Disease) Act 1984, meaning those who fail to wear a face covering will face a fine of up to £100.

This is in line with the fine for failing to do so on public transport.

The fine will reduce to £50 if paid within 14 days, and will be enforced by the police.

While shop employees should encourage compliance, retailers and businesses will not be expected to enforce the policy.

A No10 spokesperson said:

“There is growing evidence that wearing a face covering in an enclosed space helps protect individuals and those around them from coronavirus.”

Public responses to the proposal have varied.

Some have suggested that the move towards enforced use of face coverings is too little too late, while others feel it is vital that everybody wear a mask in public.

What do you think – is this necessary?
