Man jailed after rooftop drama

A 25-year-old man has been jailed after a rooftop standoff in Hainton Avenue in Grimsby.

Joshua George, of Wootton Road, Grimsby, was  jailed for 16 weeks, given a restraining order and ordered to pay £150 in compensation, after the incident on Friday, July 10.

He appeared at Grimsby Magistrates’ Court where he pleaded guilty to causing criminal damage to roof tiles and solar panelling; causing a nuisance to the public by climbing onto a roof; breaching a domestic violence prevention order and using threatening or abusive words or behaviour.

Chief Inspector Paul French said: “When people decide to take to a roof it often has a huge impact on those that live and work in that area.

“Not only are they putting their own safety at risk, they are also risking the safety of everyone nearby – often resulting in a cordon and road closures having to be put in place whilst the incident is safely resolved.

“We do not tolerate these standoffs and, as you can see from this sentencing, we can and will take action against those that choose to behave in this way.

“I hope the sentence passed serves as a very real warning for others that think taking to a roof is a good idea. We will arrest you and we will do everything in our power to put you before the courts.”
