By Operation Galaxy arrests continue to soar
“We are not stopping,” was the message today from the police officer in charge of the hugely successful crackdown on crime Operation Galaxy.
Its legacy will be a “new norm” in tackling crime, said Chief Superintendent Darren Downs.
“Our priority will always be to keep the public safe and to protect vulnerable members of our community, and our aim is to make a real difference for the future, and to create a legacy that means we have a ‘new norm’ in tackling and reducing crime,” said Chief Supt Downs.
In the last two months the Humberside Police force-wide initiative has seen: 751 arrests for various offences including drugs, robbery, burglary, sexual offences and theft; 153 warrants executed at properties across East Yorkshire and Northern Lincolnshire; and 234 people charged with crimes and currently going through the court process.
Large quantities of drugs seized include cocaine, heroin and cannabis, with an approximate street value in excess of £5 million (predominately cannabis from factories discovered through warrants).
Numerous weapons seized include a hand gun, shot gun, air rifle, two tasers, an imitation hand gun, PAVA spray, four knuckle dusters, four bladed weapons, a machete and an axe.
More than 46 people have been detained on failure to appear warrants.
The expanded Operation Galaxy team is continuing in its current form throughout this month, with the original proactive Galaxy Team eventually taking back the reins.
However Chief Supt Downs pledged there would be no let-up in the pressure on criminals, with 100 people taken into custody in the last two weeks alone and as recently as today (Thursday, July 16) a series of warrants being executed.
He added he “really hoped” people could feel the difference and said the feedback so far was that this was the case.
