A Scunthorpe man allegedly threatened to smash up his wife’s car with a sledgehammer after she developed a close relationship with another man.

Having discovered that his wife had kissed another man, Steven Payne, 53, harassed the woman and breached a court order banning him from contacting her.

He repeatedly demanded to know who the person was.

Payne subsequently sent a threatening message to a man he wrongly believed was the one she was interested in.

He then continued trying to find out who the person was and forcefully snatched her mobile phone in a bid to find out what was going on.

On one occasion, Steven Payne threatened his wife while in possession of a six-inch-bladed knife.

He spent two-and-a-half months in custody before being allowed bail.

He has now avoided a prison sentence following his appearance at Grimsby Crown Court.

A court heard that his behaviour had escalated after Payne’s wife developed a close friendship with a customer at work.

Payne admitted breaching a non-molestation order made on November 19, after the couple separated in October.

Police were called out a total of 12 times to disputes and disturbances.

Steven Payne also physically assaulted his wife, grabbing her by her arm and throwing beer in her face.

He told Grimsby Crown Court: “I am over my wife. We are not divorced. I don’t need alcohol in my life any more.”

He was given an 18-month community order and a two-year restraining order.
