Near-miss during police chase with drink-driver
A drunk-driver attempting to evade capture narrowly avoided colliding with an oncoming police car during a chase.
Daniel Nelson, 51, was chased around the streets of Scunthorpe as he weaved around the roads, ran several red traffic lights and drove onto the wrong side of the road.
He had been spotted by police as he exited a parking bay without lights on in Frances Street.
He was approached by police but drove off, causing officers from the Humber Roads team to pursue him.
Nelson reached 72mph in a 40mph speed limit zone.
Eventually, the pursuit came to a halt and the suspect was apprehended when he reached a dead end and narrowly missed an oncoming police vehicle.
He subsequently admitted to dangerous driving, failing to stop for police, driving while banned and drink-driving at around 10pm on February 21.
A breath test revealed that he had 91mcg of alcohol in 100ml of breath.
The legal limit is 35mcg.
At the time of the incident the Nelson, who was driving a Mini Cooper, had drunk six to eight pints of Carling.
Grimsby Crown Court heard that he had already been banned from driving at time of police chase.
He has also been convicted for 40 previous offences.
Daniel Nelson has been sentenced to a year in prison for the offence.
