Firefighters battle blaze in Grimsby building

Firefighters spent almost 90 minutes battling a large blaze at a building on a street in Grimsby in the early hours of this morning, Monday 27 July.

Crews from Humberside Fire and Rescue Service were called to a block of garages on Weelsby Street at around 12.15am.

The blaze required two separate fire crews, after flames were seen coming from the roof of the property.

The building was severely damaged by the fire, and the area was cordoned off while the incident was dealt with.

The junction of Weelsby Street and Hamilton Street is in a built up residential area, so there were concerns that the fire might spread to people’s homes.

Fortunately, they managed to contain the spread of the fire, and no other buildings were affected.

A Humberside Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said:

“One hose reel jet and two main lines were in use.

“We got the call at 12.18am and crews left at 1.44am.”

The exact cause of the fire is not yet known.
