Fire crews tackled the blaze for around four hours.

They were on site until around 3am.

The front of the historic building has been partially destroyed and the rest of the structure has sustained serious damage.

Demolition work is underway at the site, which has been vacant for some time.

North Lincolnshire Council has confirmed that this will not delay the demolition.

A spokesperson for Humberside Fire and Rescue said:

“We received a call at 11.12pm. Part of the front has been 100 per cent destroyed, and the rest of the building has suffered smoke damage.

“During the operation, we used six breathing apparatus, four jets, two hose reels and two ladders.

“The exact cause hasn’t been determine yet, but has determined to be deliberate.”

Humberside Police added:

“An investigation has begun following reports of a fire at a building on Market Hill, Scunthorpe just after 11pm last night, Monday 3 August.

“The investigation is in its very early stages with lines of enquiry ongoing to determine the circumstances that led the building to catch fire. Fortunately, no-one was in the building at the time.

“We would ask anyone who may have information that could help our enquiries to contact us on our non-emergency number 101, quoting crime reference 16/81388/20. Alternatively, you can call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

It has been confirmed that the fire was started deliberately.

Nobody is thought to have been injured during the blaze.
