A robber has been jailed after he snatched money from a woman and her children at a cash machine in Doncaster.

Sheffield Crown Court heard how Lee Whitehouse, aged 32, of Broughton Avenue, grabbed the cash from a woman at a store at around 2.45pm on May 18.

The victim was accompanied by her three children.

Yesterday Andrew Smith, prosecuting, told the hearing how the woman had used a nearby cash machine when she was approached by the defendant.

He barged into her and snatched money from her hand.

Whitehouse is alleged to have told the woman “you are not having that,” before forcing the money from her hand.

He fled the scene in a VW Passatt being driven by an unidentified accomplice.

Whitehouse pleaded guilty to robbery, and to an additional charge of making off without paying for fuel at a petrol station two days earlier.

Judge Jeremy Richardson QC told Whitehouse:

“The most serious aspect – apart from the robbery being serious in itself – was the fact the children were watching their mother being robbed.”

The defendant is said to have problems with drug and alcohol abuse, alongside mental health issues.

Lee Whitehouse had only recently been released from prison for a previous offence, and has now been sentenced to a further two years in custody.
