Watford’s free ‘Big Screen’ movies will return this year – but at new locations.

Residents will be able to enjoy a ‘cinema under the stars’ experience and watch the sunset over the town’s beautiful parks.

Watford Borough Council’s popular events have been adapted for a “socially spacious” programme of open-air cinema in a Covid-secure setting.

Instead of the town centre, it will be installed at the following parks to make social distancing easier:

  • Tuesday 18 to Saturday 22 August – Woodside Playing Fields
  • Sunday 23 to Thursday 27 August – King George V Playing Fields
  • Friday 28 to Monday 31 August – Knutsford Playing Fields

The move comes amid the strict social distancing measures in place and by moving to the new locations, it will be much easier for everyone is keep safe.

Cinemagoers will be able to sit within a “circle” on the grass for a maximum of six people from their social bubble so they can watch the film as a group.

There is a terrific line-up of movies designed to appeal to all age groups, from sing-along Aladdin and family favourite The Lion King, to Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and Detective Pikachu. Grab some popcorn and put down a blanket while you watch the films. You can also take your own chair to the event.

Elected Mayor of Watford Peter Taylor said: “I’m pleased that we are able to bring our town together in this way and, despite these recent challenges, provide these events free of charge.

“I know these have been tough times for everyone but many of us will enjoy the opportunity to get outside and enjoy one of the fantastic films being shown.”
