Birth drama on Cleethorpes’ seafront

Cleethorpes Coastguard might well have attracted its youngest recruit – a baby it was called to deliver on the resort’s seafront.
The incident happened yesterday (Monday) afternoon, after a member of the public rushed into the station just as crew members were getting ready to go home.
The person told them a woman on the seafront was giving birth.
“Fortunately, we have a multi-skilled team and one of our two resident paramedics and a LIVES responder were both in the station,” said a Cleethorpes Coastguard spokesperson.
“They both assisted the lady while waiting for an ambulance to arrive.
“Other team members and Cleethorpes Beach Safety team took care of the lady’s dignity and provided a screen from the eyes of the public.”
East Midlands Ambulance Service quickly arrived on the scene and transported the lady to Grimsby‘s Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital.
“We almost delivered a new recruit, our first baby!! ‘Call Sign, Cleethorpes 12’,” added the spokesperson. “We wish mum and baby well.”
This was one of three call-outs Cleethorpes Coastguard received all within the same hour.
The first one was when Humber Coastguard paged the team at around 2pm.
“After receiving a call of good intent relating to a group of three people who appeared to be in difficulty in an inflatable kayak opposite the Coastguard Station, we were tasked to locate and assist.
“But the team was not needed, as when we arrived at the station we could see the people in the kayak were safe and did not need our assistance,” said Cleethorpes Coastguard.
And in the third incident they were asked to assist with a casualty evacuation off the RNLI Humber Lifeboat.
The man had suffered an injury to one of his fingers aboard a fishing vessel, when his hand became trapped by a rope.
“He was a walking wounded casualty and did not have any other injuries. A family member picked him up and transported him to Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital. We wish him a speedy recovery.”
