Escaped emu returns home after six day chase

Following reports that a six foot Emu had escaped its owner’s property, the bird has returned to its home in Doncaster after a six day chase.

Emus are native to Australia, cannot fly, and can only move at speeds of up to 30mph.

Police and RSPCA officers attempting to trace the bird received more than a dozen reported sightings.

One person reported having seen her almost 10 miles away.

Ethel is thought to have fled her home after being spooked by passers-by taking photos.

Each additional sighting appears to have resulted in the bird running away.

Owner Kerry Dobson said:

“She’s been running since Thursday so could be anywhere.

“She’s had stones thrown at her and all sorts. She’s not used to being out she must be terrified.”

A spokesperson for South Yorkshire Police said:

“The last sightings suggested it was heading back towards where it was believed to live in Sprotbrough, but we are unable to confirm if it was reunited with its owner as it ran off from officers and we then could not locate it.”

The RSPCA added:

“We’ve advised that we will come out to try to catch it if it is in an enclosed area it can’t escape from, so it sounds like it’s still at large at the moment.”

Yesterday, it was reported that Ethel had returned home and been reunited with her owners following a fresh appeal.

Sightings should be reported to the police via the non emergency number 101.
