Driver clocked doing 125mph

Yesterday evening, Wednesday 12 August, South Yorkshire Police officers caught a speeding driver doing 125mph on the M18 in South Yorkshire.

The driver was clocked and stopped by police, before being handed a summons to court after being clocked driving at 125mph, almost twice the speed limit.

Officers also found another driver doing 91mph on the M1 in the same evening.
They said:
“At those speeds, it would take a split second for it all to go wrong and that’s a sight that we have seen far too often.”
Just one day earlier, a cyclist was seriously injured in a major incident on another South Yorkshire motorway.
The 71 year-old cyclist was found laid in the road.

He is currently being treated in Northern General Hospital, and officers are searching for a silver/grey coloured estate car which was in the area at the time.

Following a series of incidents, police officers in South Yorkshire began an operation targeting speeding drivers in the county earlier this year.
Following a public poll, local residents chose speeding as the most important issue facing the community.

At the time, Supt Paul McCurry told the BBC:

“Our primary focus today is around education, but we are out on our road network and we are visible.

“We want to demonstrate to the community that we take their complaints seriously.”
