Three lives saved in Cleethorpes rescue
Three lives were saved off
Cleethorpes’ beach after a family got into trouble using an inflatable kayak and a paddleboard.
The rescue happened as new orange safety flags have been installed in the resort, warning people when offshore winds are a danger.
Cleethorpes Coastguard sprung into action after a 999 call at around 9am yesterday (Saturday) from a man who said the group had got into difficulty while out near Haile Sand Fort.
“Fortunately they had had the foresight to take a mobile phone with them in a waterproof case, they were all also wearing high visibility personal floatation devices,” said a spokesperson for
Cleethorpes Coastguard.
Two adults and a child were being blown out into the river by the strong offshore winds and ebbing tide and were experiencing difficulties getting back to shore.
“Our team deployed in two vehicles allowing us to get to two vantage points to locate the casualties.
“Cleethorpes Beach Safety team was requested by Humber Coastguard to attend the location to try and locate the casualties.
“RNLI Cleethorpes were paged to carry out the rescue, taking directions from our team the volunteer crew quickly reached the casualties, by which time they were a mile and a half from shore.”
They were taken back to the safety of the shore, where they were checked out but did not need any medical attention.
The spokesperson added: “We strongly advise anyone who is planning to go out onto the water to always check the weather conditions and tide times before putting to sea.
“Appearances at Cleethorpes can be deceptive close inshore as the wind is shadowed from buildings on the shoreline.
“Fast flowing tides and currents can also catch you out.
“This incident has been recorded as three lives saved.
“We continue to work together closely to save lives and teamwork between RNLI Cleethorpes and Cleethorpes Coastguard has fortunately paid off again.”
Due to the growing popularity of water activities in Cleethorpes this year, Cleethorpes Beach Safety has placed orange flags along the resort, so people can check the wind direction before heading out into the water.
If the orange flags are pointing towards the sea (offshore) this indicates that you are at risk of being taken out to sea with the wind.
The flags are located at North Prom, Lower Kingsway and Humberston fitties.
