Hull Fair cancelled for 2020

Hull Fair has joined the ever-growing list of events to be affected by restrictions on large gatherings, as organisers state that the event will not go ahead this year.

The Showman’s Guild and Hull City Council announced the unfortunate news on Friday.

This is the first time in 75 years that the fair has been officially cancelled.

Hull Fair was set to take place between Friday 9 and Saturday 17 October 2020.

Councillor Dave Craker, Hull City Council’s portfolio holder for leisure and culture, said:

“It’s incredibly disappointing that we have had to cancel these popular events.

“Months of planning is involved in events of this scale and unfortunately under current Government guidelines we are unable to see a way of holding them safely in their current formats.

“The public health of our residents is paramount and we are now working with the city’s other event providers to ensure we are in a position to make 2021 a year to remember.

“I’d like to thank the event’s participants for their understanding and cooperation at this time.”

The council have worked alongside the Guild since May, monitoring any changes to restrictions which might allow the event to go ahead.

Unfortunately there is still no certainty at the current time that the current regulations with regards to mass gatherings and events will change sufficiently to allow an event of this size to take place.

This means the decision to not hold Hull Fair 2020 has been confirmed.

A statement released by the council last week said:

“The health and safety of those who come together to make Hull Fair happen, including visitors, showmen, staff, officials, partners and contractors remains paramount and until the fair can be held safely, it will not go ahead.

“Moving forward, discussions will soon be underway with the multi-agency and public health teams, and the Yorkshire Section of the Showmen’s Guild to look at planning future safe and successful Hull Fairs.”
