RNLI issues coastal weather warning

Storm Francis has hit the region bringing with it a two day weather warning, heavy downpours and winds of up to 70mph.

A yellow wind warning is in place until midday on Wednesday, and the RNLI have issued advice around coastal safety.

Conditions have already seen several people rescued from unexpectedly large waves and rising tides.

The RNLI have warned people living in coastal regions, and who are entering open waters during stormy weather to be aware that storms can easily change the landscape of some beaches, changing or damaging access points, or even creating new areas for rip currents.

Even from the shore, large breaking waves can sweep you off your feet and drag you out to sea.

The organisation have urged the public to avoid taking risks.

Storm Francis is also expected to cause transport disruption and loss of power in some places.

Chief meteorologist for the Met Office, Andy Page, said:

“The UK is in for another unseasonably wet and windy spell with Storm Francis arriving on Tuesday.

“There will be strong winds and heavy rain, especially in the west of the UK.

“A number of severe weather warnings have been issued and these warnings can be updated regularly so please keep up to date with the latest Met Office forecast.”

The Met Office have warned of potential ‘danger to life’ from flooding and flying debris.

Conditions are expected to clear up by Wednesday lunchtime.
