Concrete barriers which were installed in June to improve social distancing in some of Cleethorpes’ main areas are to be removed, North East Lincolnshire Council have confirmed.

Locals can expect to see the barriers disappear from the resort over the next few weeks.

The barriers were installed as lockdown was lifted in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Despite a recent increase in cases, the area’s infection rate remains one of the lowest in the country.

Councillors and the public health team have therefore agreed to remove the barriers in order to help the resort get back to normal.

Councillor Stewart Swinburn, Cabinet member for highways, said:

“I’m very proud of our record in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and it’s partly due to diligence of our community that the infection rate remains one of the lowest in the country.

“As a result, we feel it’s the right time for us to start to remove the barriers as people have started to take personal responsibility for social distancing, and more understand the impact of their actions.”

The first set of barriers to be removed will be on Sea View Street.

Traffic being allowed through again from tomorrow, Tuesday 8 September.

The remaining barriers on St Peter’s Avenue, Market Place and the North and Central Proms will be removed later this month.

Once removed, the traffic flows will return to normal.

The barriers on Sea Road will remain to maintain the pedestrian walkway outside the old Waves site.
