Major changes as roundabout work restarts in Grimsby
A new contractor is completing works to build a roundabout at a busy Grimsby junction after work stopped during coronavirus.
Works at the junction of Little Coates Road and Cambridge Road have restarted after being suspended during the Covid-19 pandemic – with a new road closure in place.
A statement from North East Lincolnshire Council said: “Following discussions, the council and ENGIE ended the contract with Jackson Civil Engineering, the original contractor undertaking works, on Tuesday 18 August.
“There are several reasons behind this decision, but we cannot disclose these due to the ongoing discussions.
“A new contractor, PBS Construction, is completing the remainder of the works.”
The current phase involves a full road closure on Cambridge Road between the current mini-roundabout and Grange Primary School – a move causing major disruption to drivers, especially some who use the Aldi supermarket.
The closure, put in place on Thursday, is due to last until Friday, December 18, with diversions in place.
A spokesperson for the council said: “The full closure of the road is required to undertake works to underground utility equipment which the providers have identified since the scheme started construction.
“In parallel to the works on Cambridge Road, the construction of the new roundabout is continuing off the carriageway and the temporary footpath and crossing point will remain in place during this time.
“Closing the road completely will enable the team on the ground to make the required changes as quickly and safely as possible, while also allowing the acceleration of the remaining civil engineering works.”
Access to properties, businesses and a pedestrian route will be maintained.
When the roundabout construction is completed the remaining works will include realignment of the existing roads to meet the new roundabout and final landscaping.
