New restrictions at Grimsby’s recycling centres

North East Lincolnshire Council have implemented new restrictions around disposing of mattresses at Grimsby and Immingham’s recycling centres.

Anybody wishing to dispose of a mattress must now book in advance by contacting the recycling centre, who will now only accept a limited number each day.

This update comes after visitors abandoned almost 100 mattresses per day last week.

According to North East Lincolnshire Council, Community Recycling Centres in Grimsby and Immingham have been inundated with mattresses since restrictions were lifted last week.

Other recycling centres across the country are also now limiting how many they will take, as mattresses are not usually recycled and are often sent to landfill.

North East Lincolnshire Council lifted several restrictions at the CRCs last week for bulky items such as sofas and armchairs.

But, they say new restrictions for mattresses need to be put in place.

In addition to restricting the quantity of mattresses that each site will take, staff are also unable to help with bulky waste disposal due to social distancing measures.

Anybody attending the site to dispose of a mattress without booking in advance will now be turned away.

Bulky waste collections are operating as usual.
