Nightlife returns to Scunthorpe’s Britannia

A new bar located in what is now the Britannia House Business Centre is set to open this Friday, bringing nightlife back to the former clubbing venue.

The Britannia building was first opened in 1907 as a traditional ale house.

It was converted into a bar and nightclub in 2010.

Once the busiest nightclub in Scunthorpe town centre, Britannia struggled to remain profitable and closed its doors on New Years’ Eve 2018.

It has since been relaunched as a business centre, having stood empty for over a year.

The upper floors of the building have been converted into office spaces.

Discussing the redevelopment, Pete Hewes, the creative director of Know Film said:

“Britannia House is fast becoming an exciting hub of regeneration for business in the heart of North Lincolnshire.

“In the very centre of Scunthorpe, on the corner of the High Street and Frodingham Road, the distinctive building, a former public house, has recently been rejuvenated and relaunched as Britannia House.

“The fact is, North Lincolnshire – and Scunthorpe in particular – is alive with possibility right now.

Now, an up-market new bar is set to open at the site, bringing nightlife back to the building.

The Black Door bar will be welcoming customers from this Friday.

Due to new social-distancing measures, only groups with a maximum of six guests will be permitted to enter.

A track and trace system will also be in place.

The venue has been partially funded by a crowdfunding page, which raised more than £3000.

Owner Jarek Szenher said:

“When the Britannia Bar and Nightclub (The Brit) closed its doors at the very beginning on 2019 it was very much another nail in the nightlife coffin in Scunthorpe.

“This iconic building has been left empty … but Britannia House will become the towns hub for commercial business space and will also house the Black Door.

“We want to bring the big city feel for drinks and atmosphere into the centre of Scunthorpe’s current hospitality sector. We are launching our own spirits range which we will use in the bar and we will also sell these online to the general public.

“Our focus will be on smaller companies who create absolutely amazing products which you may well have not heard about but are doing really incredible things.”

There are also plans for a restaurant at the location.
