Supermarkets prepare for second-wave panic buying
Several of the UK’s major supermarkets have begun making preparations in anticipation of a second-wave of panic buying.
Earlier this year, fears that a national lockdown might cause a break-down in the supply chain resulted in widespread panic buying, leaving supermarket shelves empty and many essentials hard to come by.
Now, amid ongoing speculation surrounding a second national lock-down, Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda and Morrisons all say they are prepared for similar scenes.
There has been no confirmation of a second lockdown, however new restrictions have already been introduced, with Prime Minister Boris Johnson is expected to address the nation on Tuesday.
Already, supermarkets say there are signs that people are beginning to stock-up.
Items including eggs, kitchen paper, pasta and wet wipes are already running low, but supermarkets say they are prepared this time round.
According to a report by MailOnline, Morrisons has reinstated security at almost 500 of its branches.
Tesco has doubled its online shopping capacity to 1.5million slots a week, and Ocado now has a three-week waiting list.
Sainsbury’s is also seeing ‘high demand’.
Andrew Opie, head of food and sustainability at the British Retail Consortium, has urged shoppers to be considerate and shop for food as they would usually.
