Brits could be about to enjoy their last day of summer weather tomorrow (Tuesday) with forecasters anticipating the possible arrival of an 800-mile wide storm, bringing wind speeds of up to 65mph if it hits the UK.
The mercury will drop to an average-for-the-time-of-year 14C this week, after a sunny start to the week today.
If the storm – the first of winter – develops enough to prompt amber warnings, the Met Office will name it Storm Aiden.
Tomorrow (the 22nd) is also the autumnal equinox, which most people class as the first day of autumn.
It is a day when night-time and daytime are roughly equal.
Astronomically, on the day of the equinox, the Sun crosses the celestial equator and the days start to grow shorter.
The Met Office’s weather forecast for the Scunthorpe area for tomorrow says: “Sunny changing to cloudy by early evening.” Temperatures are likely to reach 22C at around 3pm.
But then Wednesday looks a lot more miserable, with cloud changing to light rain mid-morning and highs of 13C.
On Thursday, a cloudy start will gave way to light showers by lunchtime and highs will be 13C.
Friday will be a mixture of sunny spells and cloud, with temperatures dropping another one or two degrees once again.
The weekend will see clear starts on both days, but more cloud by lunchtime and highs of 13C.
In its long-range forecast, the Met Office warns of “cold spells” from October 1 to October 15.
