Cleethorpes girl seriously ill after taking drugs in Weelsby Woods

A 16-year-old Cleethorpes girl is in a serious but stable condition in hospital after a group of friends met in Weelsby Woods to take drugs.

The incident happened on Friday when the youngsters met to take what is believed to have been MDMA – commonly known as ecstasy.

However, one of the girls – aged 16 – became seriously ill and was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit in Leeds in what was initially believed to be a life-threatening condition.

It is thought to be the first time any of the group had taken drugs – which police believe could have been cut with other substances.

Humberside officers are now supporting the family of the girl.

Detective Inspector Kerry Bull said: “This situation is every parent’s worst nightmare and my heart goes out to them and the rest of the girl’s family and friends.

“My team and I are investigating the wider circumstances of the incident but we understand this was the first time any of the group had taken drugs.

“Initial tests suggest that the substance the friends took may have been cut with other substances, which I am sorry to say is not unusual with drugs of this type.

“When taking illegal substances, it’s impossible to know what they have been cut with and how that could affect you until it’s too late.

“At this point, none of the other girls have been taken ill. However, it could have easily been very different.”

Inspector Dave Stephenson, from the Grimsby East Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “We know that Weelsby Woods is a popular place for people of all ages to meet with their friends.

“My teams – as well as our colleagues from North East Lincolnshire Council’s antisocial behaviour team – actively engage with them to talk about keeping themselves and each other safe.

“As part of this work, PC Nick Gibbs and the wider Grimsby policing team visit the park and the woodland every day to help build up those relationships and provide reassurance to everyone visiting the park.

“If you have any concerns about something you see in the area, please let us know so that we can target our patrols when they will be most effective.”

A 15-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of supplying a controlled drug and assault. He has been released on conditional bail, pending further enquiries.

In addition, a 16-year-old girl has been arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply class A drugs and a 15-year-old girl has been arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the supply of class A drugs. Both have been released on conditional bail.
