Scam emails demand parking fines

People in North East Lincolnshire are being warned against scam emails that request payment for a parking offence.

There have been reports that an email is circulating claiming a person has received a fixed penalty notice (FPN).

The email is said to be from the Home Office and gives a supposed email address for them, as well as a telephone number that apparently does not work. It also then gives details on how to make a quick payment.

Civil enforcement officers in North East Lincolnshire issue penalty charge notices (PCNs) for parking offences, not FPNs. Officers would never email a person about an offence and would contact them by post.

Councillor Ron Shepherd, portfolio holder for safer and stronger communities, said: “If you suspect you have been targeted by a scammer, do not part with any money or personal details.

“Never let yourself be pressurised into doing something you are suspicious of and seek advice.”

Read emails carefully and remain scam aware. Such emails can be reported to the National Cyber Security Centre at report@phishing.gov.uk
