Grimsby residents are being invited to take part in a series of pop-up workshops as part of a new arts project!
Local artist Annabel McCourt is photographing local subjects, which will used to create copper figures for the new-look St James’ Square.
Families, individuals and even pets, can have their pictures taken by Annabel McCourt, who is the Grimsby born artist leading this special piece of art as part of the town’s transformation.
McCourt will use the pictures she takes to make different-sized copper figures that will together make-up her ‘Murmuration’ art piece – hundreds of statues of all shapes and sizes, which represent the true people of Grimsby.

Annabel explained how this piece of work was being designed to ‘capture a moment in time’ to tell the story of the real people of Grimsby.

She said:

“Some may ask, what is Grimsby like? I will say, this is what our town looks like and here are its people.

“The copper these figures are made of will age over time and look beautiful, changing with the different light.”

Annabel is one of two artists commissioned by Our Big Picture to work on the Our Haven arts project at St James’ Square.

The other is Adrian Riley, who is concentrating on using words and phrases to capture the essence of Grimsby.

Both artists, along with Our Big Picture, are working as part of ‘Grimsby Creates’ – an umbrella brand for cultural activity over the next three years supported by the Cultural Development Fund.

A number of workshops have been scheduled for residents to attend and become part of Grimsby’s history.
Events will be held at Freeman Street Market on Friday 23 October between 11am to 2pm, and at Grimsby Top Town Market on Thursday 22 October, Saturday 24 October, and Saturday 7 November between 11am to 2pm.
