Staff feel the strain as hospital pressures increase

Staff at hospitals in Grimsby and Scunthorpe are suffering under the strain of growing Covid-19 pressures, according to health bosses.
Today’s statistics show 141 Covid positive inpatients across the Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation  Trust – 71 at Grimsby and 67 at Scunthorpe, with 11 in ICU ( four at Grimsby, seven at Scunthorpe).
“We may be a week into the national lockdown but we are not yet seeing the full impact of this on our hospitals due to the time it takes for people to start showing symptoms and their condition worsening to the point where they need to be in hospital,” said Dr Kate Wood, Medical Director of the trust.
“The pressure on the hospitals is much worse than in wave one, we are seeing many more patients requiring specialist treatment and more and more of our staff are being affected, either because they or someone they live with has the virus or they have been told to self- isolate.
“We are doing everything we can to support our staff but they are really starting to feel the strain; both emotionally and physically.”
She said difficult decisions were being made “on a daily basis”, including cancelling some people’s planned surgery.
“This is not something we take lightly but if we don’t all do what we can to prevent the spread of coronavirus it is inevitable that more and more people will have procedures postponed or experience a long wait when they visit our emergency departments.
“If you are tiring of the restrictions, please think of the impact not adhering to them could have on your family and friends if they require treatment in the coming weeks.”
North East Lincolnshire has the fourth highest coronavirus rate in England and could be at risk of entering Tier 3 restrictions after lockdown.
That could mean household mixing is banned at Christmas.
