Disruption for drivers and pedestrians as footbridge works continue

Important preparation for the installation of Grimsby’s new Garth Lane footbridge will continue this week with piling works moving to the Victoria Street side of the River Freshney.

The footpath in the immediate area of the works will close over two days, between Tuesday and Thursday, (November 24-26) to ensure health and safety requirements are met.

This is to allow for the piling to take place as part of abutment works for the new bridge.

Diversions will take pedestrians on to the other side of Frederick Ward Way at its junction with Alexandra Road to the west, and back across at the B&M access to the east.

The outside lane of Frederick Ward Way will also be closed to traffic travelling east, again to meet necessary health and safety requirements. Access will be maintained to Victoria Street South/the Freshney Place car park entrance with the inside lane of the carriageway remaining open.

Motorists are also warned of a series of overnight road closures, which will affect Frederick Ward Way for five nights from Monday, November 30 to the morning of Saturday, December 5 between 7.30pm and 5.30am.

This is for carriageway resurfacing with the complete closure of the road between the Peaks Parkway junction and the junction of Frederick Ward Way with Alexandra Road. Diversion signs will direct motorists around the closure (Alexandra Road, Corporation Road, Victoria Street South).

Access to B&M and Home Bargains will be maintained.

As reported, the old Garth Lane footbridge has been removed with pedestrian diversions via Alexandra Road in place until next spring, when the new 5m-wide structure is due to be installed.

The work is part of the wider project to completely transform the Garth Lane area with the new bridge, new lighting, CCTV, seating, landscaping, and paving. It is due to completed in the spring.
