Donna Nook releases seal ‘pupdate’
More than 1,300 pups have been born at the Donna Nook seal colony so far this year, according to the latest update.
Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust closed the seal viewing area and new booking system following the Government announcement of a new national lockdown earlier this month, however is keeping the public updated through its Donna Nook Warden Facebook page.
The latest count revealed: 1,378 pups, 1,501 cows and 462 bulls.
A video posted by the warden yesterday (Sunday) caught a lovely moment between a mum and her pup.
A Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust spokesperson previously said: “We know you’re all missing the seals but thank you for following the government guidelines and not travelling to Donna Nook at the moment.”
Staff continue to be present on site to manage the situation and monitor the colony and give regular “pupdates” on social media.
Thousands of visitors from all over the UK flock to Donna Nook every November and December when grey seals visit the coastline to give birth to their pups near the sand dunes.
Donna Nook covers more than 10km (6.25 miles) of coastline between Grainthorpe Haven in the north and Saltfleet in the south where it borders the Saltfleetby-Theddlethorpe National Nature Reserve.
Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust is a charity that manages almost 100 of the best sites for wildlife in Lincolnshire, North Lincolnshire and North East Lincolnshire. Its work is helping to secure the future of many important habitats and species, which might otherwise be lost.
It is appealing for people to support it with donations due to the effects of coronavirus.
A spokesperson said: “With visitor centres temporarily closed and events cancelled, vital funding has disappeared but the crisis facing nature hasn’t. Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust is continuing to fight for nature but can only do so with your support.
“As a charity, we’ve been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic. Wildlife needs your help now more than ever. Please, if you can, donate to our seal appeal and help us to keep protecting the seals and their important habitat www.lincstrust.org.uk/donate.”
