Successful lift of Grimsby’s Corporation Bridge
Routine maintenance works are being carried out on Grimsby’s landmark Corporation Road Bridge today.
Built in 1925 and officially opened by the Prince of Wales in 1928, the bridge replaced an earlier swing bridge dating to back 1872.
The maintenance work will include the oiling and cleaning of the mechanical parts and bystanders even witnessed a run of the lifting mechanism earlier this morning.
Maria Louise, bystander, said:
“It’s been years since i’ve seen the bridge lifted”.
“I remember as a child, being sat in the car waiting for it to open and close”.
“I hadn’t even realised it was still operational, it was nice to see”.
To ensure the works are being completed safely, a full road closure will be in place from 9.30am to 3.30pm.
The section of Corporation Road affected by the road closure will be between the mini roundabout at the entrance to Alexandra Retail Park and the junction with Victoria Street.
Advanced warning signs are in place and diversions are signposted.
Access for pedestrians and cyclists is generally be maintained across the bridge, but there will be short periods of times when this is not possible.
