Covid cases falling in North East Lincolnshire
North East Lincolnshire now has the 16th highest weekly rate of Covid-19 cases in England – however the daily number of new cases is falling significantly.
That is the key point in the latest epidemiology report for the area.
A total of 5,166 residents of North East Lincolnshire have had a confirmed diagnosis of Covid-19 which is an increase of 346 cases over the last week (compared with 652 new cases reported the previous week).
The weekly rate of new Covid-19 infections in the borough now stands at 316 per 100,000 compared with a rate of 471 per 100,000 one week ago, “representing a significant downward trend”.
The report, released yesterday (Wednesday) but dated November 30, says: “In North East Lincolnshire analysis of cases confirmed since the beginning of November shows that the majority are in the working age population, with slightly more occurring in women than men.
“Our rate of new cases in the over 65s escalated substantially during October and early November but has since reduced significantly.”
Geographically cases are occurring in all parts of the borough with the highest numbers over the last two weeks reported in Scartho, Heneage and South wards.
Northern Lincolnshire and Goole Hospitals (NLaG) report that there are 71 patients with confirmed Covid-19 in Grimsby Hospital (as of November 30), a reduction of 19 from the previous week and the first such week on week reduction seen since the beginning of the second wave.
However numbers in the hospital remain more than twice as high as the peak of the first wave.
The report states: “The number of cases in North East Lincolnshire’s care homes has grown substantially in recent weeks although the most recent week saw a significant reduction in the overall number of residents with a Covid-19 infection in care homes.
“Currently 15 care homes are reporting a total of 67 residents with Covid-19. We have also seen a significant number of deaths within the care home sector.”
The number of deaths with Covid-19 recorded on the death registration has grown “substantially” since the end of September with 128 deaths recorded since then compared with just one between July and September.
More than 100 deaths were registered during the month of November, representing more than half of all Covid-19 deaths that have been registered in North East Lincolnshire since the start of pandemic. The overall number of deaths registered during the month was more than 50% higher than the typical number of deaths for this time of year.
Most of the deaths that have occurred in the second wave of the pandemic in our area have occurred in the over-80s with men accounting for 70% of deaths overall.
Hull continues to have one of the highest Covid-19 rates in England and three districts within Lincolnshire County are within the top ten nationally for new cases.
