New Deputy Leader of North East Lincolnshire announced
The new Deputy Leader of North East Lincolnshire Council has been announced after John Fenty quit the role yesterday.
Humberston and New Waltham councillor Stan Shreeve will take on the role and also retain his Cabinet job in charge of Finance and Resources.
Council Leader Philip Jackson will take on the Portfolio Holder for Regeneration, Skills and Housing role previously held by Cllr Fenty.
This major portfolio includes economic strategy, inward investment and business support, regeneration, assets (corporate, commercial, community) and estate management, all aspects of housing, skills and employability.
Announcing the appointment, Cllr Jackson said: “Stan’s skills and experience will help us maintain the huge progress we’ve made in the last 18 months and his finance background will also be a big asset in not only making the most of the exciting opportunities the area has, but also in tackling the challenges we know we face going forward.
“Our focus will remain firmly on what our residents want to see delivered and building on what we’ve achieved in such a short time.”
Cllr Shreeve added: “I share the Leader’s passion about making North East Lincolnshire a more prosperous, pleasant and safer place for all our residents, businesses and visitors and it’s a huge honour to be invited to be Deputy Leader.
“In that role, as well as my responsibilities for finance and resources, I’ll be looking to continue to support the Leader and Cabinet colleagues in taking the borough forward into 2021.”
Mr Fenty resigned his Cabinet role after controversy surrounding his links to convicted fraudster Alex May, who was given a six-year jail sentence for his part in a multi-million pound scam, as previously reported.
Mr Fenty said: “I have been meticulous in declaring any conflicts of interests throughout my time as a councillor and can hold my head up high. However, I’m not prepared to let matters in my private business life become a drain on the Administration’s effort to make this borough a great place to live work and play.
“Therefore, it is with great regret and sadness that I feel that I must relinquish my roles as deputy leader and portfolio holder for regeneration, a role it has been my greatest privilege to undertake on behalf of the Leader Philip Jackson.”
