No big bang to welcome 2021 London’s New Years Eve fireworks cancelled

London’s New Year’s Eve fireworks have been cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic, the London Mayor revealed, but don’t panic, as a fun-filled night in is heading our way!

Around 100,000 people normally pack the streets around Victoria Embankment for the annual event, where more than 12,000 fireworks normally feature in the display, which is set to music and watched by about 12 million people on TV.

Despite national disappointment, London Mayor, Sadiq Khan, whilst speaking on LBC Radio in September, admitted:

“I can tell you that there will not be a fireworks New Year’s Eve this year like in previous years”.

He did, however, say that they were instead:

“Working on something people can enjoy in the comfort and safety of their living rooms on TV”.

Later, following the announcement and after plans had been finalised, he added:

“Though there won’t be a live event for Londoners and visitors from all over the world to attend this year, we do have other exciting plans to help you see in the New Year safely in your own home”.

Whilst the nation stays in, the stars will be coming out as BBC One promises an unmissable night of fun, laughter and music.

This means people can tune into BBC One from 9pm this New Year’s Eve to watch a special broadcast to remember 2020 and look forward to 2021.

The show will only be able to be seen on TV so people are being urged to watch at home with the people they live with or are in their household bubble, and not gather at midnight as there will be no public events to attend.

Explaining the need for something to replace the fireworks, Mr Khan expressed that London:

“Really can’t lose that slot… because New Year’s Eve is a really good opportunity for the rest of the world to see how wonderful our city is”.
