Donna Nook sees record-breaking number of seal pups

Every November and December, grey seals come to the Donna Nook coastline to give birth to their pups near the sand dunes.

The wildlife spectacle attracts visitors from across the nation.

A record-breaking total of 2,214 seals have been born at Donna Nook this season.

This figure has increased by 28 since the 2019/2020 season, and by 148 since 2018/2019.

According to a recent update, the last pup was born on 22 December.

But sadly, the site has been closed to visitors this year due to the ongoing pandemic, with the warden urging people to “enjoy wildlife close to home” instead.

A spokesperson for the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust continued:

“Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust are closely monitoring the Covid-19 situation and the guidance from Government.

“Our priority is the health and wellbeing of our staff, volunteers and visitors to our nature reserves. We also have to make sure the wildlife on our reserves is not adversely impacted.

“Our wardens were busy over the Christmas and the New Year period monitoring the seals every day and we can report that the last pup was born on December 22, bringing this year’s total to 2,214.
