PPE litter increases around North East Lincolnshire

Personal protective equipment has been littering has increased dramatically across streets, car parks and other public spaces in our area. 

Face coverings, or masks, have been required on public transport, in shops and supermarkets in England since 24 July 2020 however they are increasingly being littered in the community. 

CPRE, The Countryside Charity, believes in countryside and green spaces that are accessible to all, rich in nature and playing a crucial role in responding to the climate emergency.

CPRE recently released poll results which state: “Over a third of adults in England (38%) have seen more litter near to where they live since the start of the coronavirus pandemic.”

“Over three quarters (76%) have noticed more Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) being littered.”

“Four in five people (78%) would like to see the government take more action to tackle the scourge of litter.”

The council is urging residents to switch to a greener alternative, as wearing a face mask becomes ever more important in the fight against Coronavirus.

When outside for essential travel take them home with you if there is no litter bin, do not drop them as litter.

North East Lincolnshire Council shared a tweet which said: “Disposable face covering must be discarded off in your usual ‘black bag’ residual waste bin.”

“We must not put used face coverings or Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as gloves, into the recycling bin. Nor must we drop them as litter.”
