The Government has ordered almost triple the amount of vaccine doses than are needed to give the entire UK population both of their recommended doses ans are a head of their vaccination targets.

New Covid-19 vaccine hailed as 90% effective

Health Secretary, Matt Hancock, told a Downing Street press conference yesterday the country will have more than 400 million doses if all the jabs are approved

The UK population is  nearly 67 million people.

He added: “We didn’t start this pandemic with a large scale, on shore vaccine manufacturing capability so we’re building one all across the United Kingdom.”

“My attitude has always been we protect every UK citizen as fast as we can and at the same time we’re generous around the world.”

New statistics from Public Health England show the whole country is a head on vaccination targets and all adults could be vaccinated 121 days a head in May compared to the end of September.

At the conference the government announced the country has just ordered another 40 million doses of a new vaccine from Valneva which saw manufacture start last week as its trials progress.

If approved, the Valneva jab will be manufactured in Livingston in Scotland and the Novavax vaccine will be manufactured in Teesside.

He also confirmed the full list of areas in England where door-to-door testing is taking place to try and stop the spread of a mutant strain first detected in South Africa.

The areas to be tested are: Hanwell west London, Tottenham north London, Mitcham south London, Walsall in the West Midlands, Broxbourne Hertfordshire, Maidstone Kent, Woking Surrey, and Southport Merseyside.

1 in 3 people do not show symptoms of the virus, all will be urged to agree to testing even if asymptomatic.
