Ministers consider changing the school year to keep pupils in class for longer during the summer term.
It comes as the Government tries to help pupils recover from lockdown and play ‘catch up’ with their education.
Boris Johnson pledged to set out a “roadmap” on how England’s national lockdown will be lifted in the week of February 22, with officials expressing quiet confidence that the PM’s mid-February target for vaccinating the 15 million most vulnerable people will be met.
One of the attractions for ministers of extending the summer term is that the weather would likely allow windows and doors to be kept open in school buildings to improve ventilation and reduce the risk of coronavirus spreading.
Prime Minister, Boris Johnson said the government believed March 8 was the “prudent” date to begin reopening schools in England.
While many schools are working hard to provide remote teaching, there is still concern surrounding the new variant spreading and the welfare of teachers.
