Government hints at roadmap delay
The government have extended the deadline for publishing plans to ease the third national lockdown, suggesting that the long-awaited roadmap may be delayed.
A lockdown exit plan was originally scheduled to be delivered no later than the February 22.
Now, Downing Street has said the roadmap will come “on the week of the 22nd,” rather than on the day itself.
An updated statement from Downing Street has said:
“We’ve been clear we will publish the roadmap on the week of the 22nd.
“We will set out the roadmap that week but you’ve got what we’ve said previously about trying to give schools as much notice as possible and we’ve said we’ll give at least two weeks.
“Of course we are doing everything we can to make sure people can have a holiday this summer, and we know that people are keen for certainty, but we are unfortunately not in a position to set out more detail at the moment.
“The Prime Minister said yesterday it is too early for people to be certain about what we will be able to do this summer.”
The roadmap is set to be based on a review of the current situation, which will be undertaken next week.
Meanwhile, Health Secretary Matt Hancock says there is currently “a lot of uncertainty,” and that it is “too early” to decide whether summer holidays will be possible – although he has booked one to Cornwall.
A spokesperson added that the government is doing “everything we can to make sure people can have a holiday this summer.”
