Cox updates ahead of Irons away game

Scunthorpe United take on Cambridge United in today’s away game.

Today’s kick off is at 7pm away at The Abbey Stadium.

Defender George Taft came off early in Saturday’s home game against Cheltenham Town with an ankle injury, and Cox told iFollow Iron the latest.

He said: “It looks like George Taft is going to be a long-term one. He’s going for a scan later today and we should find out in the next day or two but it’s not looking good. The swelling came on straight away.

“He’s been excellent, came in on loan and then signed permanently. He’s been a part of the good results we’ve had and will be missed, but when someone is injured you need someone to come in and we have players raring to go.”

Striker Ryan Loft came off at half-time at the weekend, and Cox updated on him while also said Emmanuel Onariase and Abo Eisa could be doubtful.

He said: “Lofty came off with a sore thigh so will be assessed, while Manny has a sore groin so we’ll have to see how he is, while Eisa has a sore hamstring so we’ll have to be careful.

“There are some players feeling the pinch at the moment because of the volume of the games, so we’ll wrap them up in cotton wool today and put out a side tomorrow going as hard as we can. We’ll look at the squad and bring a couple of fresh legs into it.”

He added: “We’re raring to go. I may have to change the way we play a little bit but it’s a good test for us. We’ll have to make sure we’re fit, organised and will try to play some entertaining football to create the chances.”

Reflecting on the Iron’s meeting with the U’s at the Sands Venue Stadium earlier this season, which ended in a 5-0 Cambridge success, Cox said: “We had some great chances in that game and then the referee gave two dubious penalties away, Myles (Hippolyte) got sent off, where one of them was never a booking. When they were 3-0 up and we had a man down it’s easy to play, and they punished us.

“We start on an even keel on Tuesday night. They need the points to stay top of the table and we need points to keep pushing up the table, so I’m looking forward to an entertaining game. They’re the best team in the league at the moment but we’re definitely a better side than when we played them earlier on in the season.”
