‘Reclaim These Streets’ vigil for missing Sarah Everard and all women who face violence.

Organiser of “Reclaim These Streets” have arrange a socially distanced vigil which is planned to take place on Clapham Common for one hour from sunset on Saturday.

Reclaim These Streets is organised by a group of women who wanted to channel the collective grief, outrage and sadness in our community. Our plan is to hold a short gathering on Clapham Common, centred around a minute of silence to remember Sarah Everard and all women lost to violence.

The police initially gave a “positive response” to the planned vigil, the women behind the event claim the Met later reversed their position due to the pandemic.

Metropolitan Police have reversed their position and stated that the vigil would be unlawful, that their “hands are tied” by the Covid-19 regulations, and that, as organisers, we could face tens of thousands of pounds in fixed penalty notices and criminal prosecution under the Serious Crimes Act.

#ReclaimTheseStreets

Reclaim These Streets have so far raised £30,000 within hours for a High Court appeal, with the Met stating the vigil will breach COVID rules.

People across the nation are being asked to show solidarity with missing Sarah Everard & all women who face violence every day by lighting a candle in their window or doorstep at 6pm on Saturday and tweeting with the hashtag #ReclaimTheseStreets.

Social media has been flooded with people across the UK joining together to support Sarah, her family and women nation wide.

It comes as Home Secretary Priti Patel sought to reassure the public over the integrity and dedication of police after the arrest of a serving officer.

The officer, who is in the Parliamentary and Diplomatic Protection Command, remains in custody after being detained on suspicion of the murder and kidnapping of Ms Everard, and on a separate allegation of indecent exposure.

The suspect, in his 40s, sustained a head injury while in custody and was taken to hospital for treatment. He has since been discharged and returned to a police station, the Metropolitan Police said.
