Construction of Waltham Road and A18 roundabout to begin in May

A date has been set by North East Lincolnshire Council on when the construction of the roundabout at the Waltham Road and A18 junction will commence.

The final phase of improvements to the A18 is set to be restarted on Monday 10 May, and is expected to take around four months to complete.

This comes after the original start date of February was postponed due to bad weather and colder temperatures.

Engineers deemed this postponement of the Waltham Road and A18 roundabout construction the best option to cause the least amount of disruption possible.

The decision to install the roundabout was made to reduce the number of accidents at this location, to slow traffic flow and to increase visibility of oncoming vehicles to those at the junction.

Councillor Stewart Swinburn, portfolio holder for environment and transport, said: “I appreciate the added disruption delaying the start of these works will cause and understand the frustrations of not starting projects during quieter periods on our roads.

“Engineers have considered all the options and worked to progress these works as swiftly as possible. Considering all the options, the only way forward is to delay the start on site, allowing for better weather conditions to ensure we can push on smoothly with this final stage, with a possible opportunity to speed up the programme of works, subject to the weather conditions and contractor.

“We have engaged with businesses affected by the programme of road safety improvements throughout the scheme and continue to do so. They have been very supporting and adaptive, and I’d like to personally thank them for their support and perseverance.”

To allow the road improvements to be carried out safely, a road closure will be in place from the A18/A46 roundabout to the Ashby Hill roundabout on the A18.

A closure will also be in place restricting access from Barnoldby le Beck to the A18.
