A South Yorkshire Police officer was forced to collide with another vehicle after its driver attempted to drive the wrong way down a motorway near Doncaster.

He rammed the vehicle as it approached the slip road at junction 4 of the M18 in a bid to protect other motorists.

The incident, which happened on Sunday morning, followed a high-speed pursuit.

The driver of the vehicle attempted to escape on foot after the crash, but was soon caught.

South Yorkshire Police said the vehicle had been spotted driving at high speed.

The driver was overtaking other vehicles “dangerously” on the A630 West Moor Link.

The danger then “went literally off the charts” as the driver went to drive the wrong way onto the motorway.

“We cannot let that happen. He could have killed someone if he had successfully committed down the slip road,” the force said.

A spokesperson added that the “quick-thinking” officer had “put himself into harm’s way to protect others” and “saved lives.”

A 21-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of driving while disqualified, failing to stop and dangerous driving in connection with the incident.

He has since been released under investigation.

Fortunately nobody was injured in the collision.
