New Scunthorpe Emergency Department given green light
Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust have shared plans for the new Emergency Department at Scunthorpe General Hospital.
The multi-million pound redevelopment is being funded by the Department of Health and Social Care and NHS England.
The new Accident and Emergency department will be complemented by a bespoke Acute Assessment Unit staffed by specialists in a range of conditions and illnesses, allowing patients to be seen and treated more quickly, often without the need to be admitted to a ward.
An area of land which is currently being used for offices and car parking, will be utilised for the new buildings.
There will also be a larger waiting area to cope with increased demand and social distancing requirements, and a dedicated play area for younger patients.
There will also be more cubicles and a dedicated ambulance bay.
A walk-through of the plans for both new departments can be viewed here:
The first stage of the Emergency Department development will be to create a new single-storey decked parking area close to the Church Lane entrance to the site, replacing the spaces on the site of the new building.
Director of Estates and Facilities, Jug Johal, the Senior Responsible Officer, said:
“I’m delighted that we have now got over this final hurdle in the planning stages of the programme and work can start in earnest to bring these new facilities online.
“The improvements we will make will help us to lower waiting times in A&E and diagnose patients more quickly as a result of faster access to specialist clinicians.
“The number one priority for our teams is to give you the best possible care and these works will give them the space, equipment and facilities you need to do that and to ensure we got this right, we have worked closely with clinical colleagues throughout the design process.”
The scheme has been given full approval by North Lincolnshire Council.
Work is scheduled to start in mid-April.
