TikTok can be harming today’s generation in more ways than one

TikTok is the latest social media trend to dominate lives, dance challenges for popular songs or videos aligned with popular in-app filters, the algorithm prioritises content that suits you.

It doesn’t come without it’s concerns though as some videos are causing quite a stir among today’s generation.

Humberside Police released a statement saying ‘it has been brought to our attention this afternoon, about a craze seen on Tik Tok, of people dressed up as crows/plague doctors, chasing children. We can confirm that there are absolutely no reports of this happening in this area.

This is something fictional which has started on a social media platform. The rumours about children being chased in Scunthorpe are totally not true. Please reassure your children.’

Body-editing apps advertised on social media platforms TikTok and Instagram are “triggering” young people with eating disorders, campaigners fear.

Adverts show how the apps can be used to alter body parts, including making waists slimmer and adding muscles.

TikTok’s For You page is a feed of videos, not always from people you follow, recommended by an algorithm based on your history. People have reported being served up accounts that regularly post about eating disorders, weight loss or diets.

Eating disorder charities have said technology firms should consider the impact on vulnerable people.

The platforms said the apps did not break advertising guidance, but TikTok added it does reviews its policies.

It said it is “continually looking to enhance” its framework to “support a body-positive environment”.
