Litter and broken glass strewn in Cleethorpes after hottest day of the year outrages locals
The hottest day of the year so far attracted many visitors to Cleethorpes yesterday to enjoy the warm weather.
Visitors enjoyed fish and chips, sipped drinks on grassy areas and relaxed on the beach, as temperatures reached 20 degrees Celsius.
However, there have been several posts on social media to complain about the litter and broken glass that was found around Cleethorpes following the resort’s busy day yesterday.
The social media posts showed the images, with one local commenting: “What on Earth is our lovely resort going to look like during the six weeks summer holidays with all the holidaymakers here as well?
“People ought to be ashamed of themselves, but they don’t have respect for the environment.”
“This is horrible to see and so upsetting. Why do people have to treat places like a dumping ground? They wouldn’t treat their homes like it so why treat the beach like it?” read another.
This comes after North East Lincolnshire Council installed three sets of additional extra-large bins in Cleethorpes, a few metres from Pier Gardens, at the weekend, in preparation for the easing of Covid-19 lockdown restrictions on Monday.
A Council spokesperson said: “Have people forgotten how to use a bin during lockdown? We put almost all street cleansing staff into the resort yesterday and today, but the amount of litter was disgusting.
“There are more than 60 litter bins along Cleethorpes Promenade so there is no excuse to leave rubbish. Litter makes the place look a mess, it’s not fair on other people and it harms wildlife.
“If you litter, you face a fine of up to £100. Enforcement officers are on patrol and will issue Fixed Penalty Notices to offenders.
“Put litter in a bin or take it home.”
